If the user can see documents when they open the database in one way it can't be a simple acl issue. Sounds more like the user is performing an action that requires a document to be selected after the database is open (perhaps by clicking too many times while waiting for it to open). I suggest you watch them do this and get them to try opening the database with the Return key rather than mouse
